A RateHighway research initiative · Seven horizons

Seven questions. One connected decision.

The future of car rental revenue management may depend less on separate forecasts and more on understanding demand, price, fleet, and rental duration together.

Research concepts are not announced product features or delivery commitments.

01

Two Saturdays. Both 70% booked. Why might they need completely different decisions?

One Saturday may have steady corporate demand continuing into a quiet weekend. Another may have a short event surge, expected cancellations, a competitor price change, and walk-up demand not yet in the report. Utilization matters. The laboratory asks what becomes possible when the reasons behind the number remain visible.

The number is the same. The situation is not.

02

When a car is booked at one location, it is unavailable somewhere else. What should pricing know about where the car will be next?

Cars are movable inventory. A booking changes the pickup location, the return location, the vehicle-class mix, and the choices available after the car returns.

Price the fleet you will have after the cars move.

03

What happens when the most likely forecast is wrong?

One forecast line hides other realistic outcomes. The laboratory is exploring how to evaluate different demand patterns, cancellation rates, events, and disruptions before setting a price.

Do not depend on one forecast. Test the decision across several realistic futures.

04

A competitor moved. Was it signal, noise, or a different strategy entirely?

A competitor’s rate change is evidence, not an instruction. Its timing, frequency, vehicle class, length of rent, and market context may explain more than the new price alone.

Understand the change before deciding whether to respond.

05

A seven-day rental changes more than today’s availability. How much of the week should a pricing decision understand?

A rental uses the fleet for a period of time. Accepting it changes which later rentals can fit, where the car will return, and which days may have too little availability.

Every booking has a pickup location and a return location.

06

What becomes visible when pricing, demand, fleet availability, and rental duration are considered together?

A high rate with many idle cars can fail. A full fleet at the wrong price or for the wrong rental durations can also fail. These are connected decisions, even when today’s software shows them on separate screens.

The screens are separate. The week is connected.

07

How much more can automation do when the operator still controls the strategy?

The operator defines the strategy and guardrails. The platform applies them. Better intelligence can make the platform more responsive without moving responsibility away from the revenue office.

More intelligence. The operator stays in control.

The whole point

One field. Seven questions. No catalog.

RateHighway is exploring how these questions connect. We are not announcing a product or release date. The exact result remains inside the laboratory.
